Indication*
Cefixime is indicated for the treatment of the following infections when caused by susceptible organisms, Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB), Acute otitis media (AOM), Uncomplicated acute cystitis, Uncomplicated pyelonephritis, Acute bacterial pharyngitis, Uncomplicated acute gonorrhoea, Urinary tract infection and cystourethritis, Cholecystitis, cholangitis, Scarlet fever, Sinusitis and tonsilitis, Typhoid fever (enteric fever) including multi-drug resistant typhoid fever. The use of cefixime should be reserved for infections in which the causative organisms is known or suspected to be resistant to other commonly used antibacterial agents. Consideration should be given to official guidance on the appropriate use of antibacterial agents.
Directions for Use*
Tap the bottle several times to loosen the powder before reconstitution, Slowly add slightly boiled and cooled water up to the mark on the bottle. Add water if necessary to adjust the volume up to the mark. The reconstituted suspension should be used within 7 days. After 7 days discard any unused residue.
Administration*
Adults: The recommended adult dosage is 50 mg/5mL daily according to the severity of infection, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses. For treatment of uncomplicated cervical/urethral due to Streptococcal pyogenes, a therapeutic dosage of cefiximes should be administered for at least 10 days. Elderly: Elderly patients may be given the same dose as recommended for adults, Renal function should be assessed and dosage should be adjusted in severe renal impairment (See Renal Impairment). Renal Impairment: CrCI >60 mL/min: No dosage adjustment necessary CrCI 21-60 mL/min: 260 mg/day PO. The usual course of treatment is 7 days. This may be continued for up to 14 days if required. Total daily dose: 8mg/kg body weight given as single dose or divided into two equal doses every 12 hours (expect for urinary tract infection where once daily dosing must be used, since twice daily dosing was shown to be not as effective in clinical trials).
