Indication*
Adjunct to diet to decrease elevated total-C, LDL-C, Apo B, & triglyceride levels & to increase HDL-C in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial & nonfamilial) or mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson type IIa & IIb); for the treatment of patients with elevated serum triglyceride levels (Fredrickson type IV); for the treatment of patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia (Fredrickson type III). Increase (eg, LDL apheresis) or if such treatment are unavailable to decrease total-C & LDL-C in patients with HoFH. Adjunct to diet to decrease total-C, LDL-C & Apo B levels in boys & postmenarchal girls 10-17 year with heterozygous familial hypercholeterolemia. Prevention of CV disease in adults without clinical evidence of CHD but with multiple risk factors for CHD; patients with type 2 diabetes without clinical evidence of CHD but with multiple risk factors for CHD; patients with clinical evidence of CHD.
Directions for Use*
General Dosing Recommendations: Lipid-modifying agents such as atorvastatin should be used in conjunction with appropriate diet and exercise. Individualize treatment according to the target lipid levels, the recommended goal of therapy and the patient's response. After initiation and/or titration of atorvastatin, lipid level determinations should be analyzed within 2 or 4 weeks and dosage adjusted accordingly.
