Used mainly for the treatment of viral infections due to herpes simplex virus (type 1 and type 2) and varicella-zoster virus (herpes zoster and chickenpox).

For the treatment of primary herpes simplex infections, including genital herpes: 200mg, 5 times daily (usually 4 hours while awake) for 5 to 10 days. Double the dose in severely immunocompromised patients or in those with impaired absorption. For suppression of recurrent herpes simplex: 800mg daily in 2 to 4 divided doses. For prophylaxis of herpes simplex in immunocompromised patients: 200mg to 400mg, 4 times daily. For treatment of chickenpox: 800 mg, 4 or 5 times daily for 5 to 7 days. For treatment of herpes zoster: 800mg, 5 times daily for 7 to 10 days. Children dose for treatment of herpes simplex infections & prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients: Age under 2 years old: Half the adult dose. Age 2 years and over: Same as adult dose. For treatment of chicekn pox: 20mg per kg body weight, up to 800mg, 4 times daily for 5 days. Or alternatively: Age under 2 years old: 200 mg, 4 times daily Age 2 to 5years old : 400mg, 4 times daily Age 6 years old and over : 800mg, 4 times daily. or as prescribed by the physician.

May be taken with or without food. May be taken with meals to reduce GI discomfort.
